Revit families are the elements that make up and reside within a Revit model. Below is a brief YouTube video by Autodesk Building outlining the different types of Revit families. Following the video I have outlined my explanation of Revit families including personal examples.

RevitSystem Families
To illustrate what a system Revit family is I would like you to think about your home in reality. This is typically a building with a floor, walls and a roof. These main elements of a building are called System Families and are preloaded into a new Revit project. These System Families, although preloaded into a project can also be modified to suit your requirements.
A personal example of this in practice can be seen in the You Tube video below that overviews the System Families I created for LouvreTec Melbourne’s entire product line including wall (vertical louvre) and roof (horizontal louvre) families. These System Families allow for the design, visualisation, documentation and scheduling of their product range entirely in Revit.

Back to the illustration of your home, we now know that System Families make up the main components of the building. The remainder of the content in a house is made up of loadable and in-place families.
This can be anything and I mean anything! - From the computer you are typing on to the window in front of you, even your coffee cup can become a Revit family. Not only that, the parameters within the family can include how you like your coffee!
The Power of Families - Micro Tunnelling Machine and My Wedding Proposal
Over the years I have modeled many different Revit Families all with very unique purposes. A snap shot of some of the more unique Families include:
The Platypus Micro Tunneling Machine – At the time of this project Revit was the only 3D package I knew how to use and certainly did the job for visualisation of the client’s product:
My Wife’s Engagement Ring! Yes, without the power of Revit Families I may not be married today ; ) This In-Place family provided me with scale drawings that I gave to my jeweller for manufacture.
The following YouTube video by IGS shows the rings evolution from a design to a reality followed by a brief insight into how the big day went down.
